Stephen is strapped when one of his instructors believes he has broken his glasses to avoid studying, but, prodded by his classmates, Stephen works up the courage to complain to the rector, Father Conmee, who assures him there will be no such recurrence, leaving Stephen with a sense of triumph. Stephen's father gets into debt and the family leaves its pleasant suburban home to live in Dublin. Stephen realises that he will not return to Clongowes.

Mit „Ulysses“ wurde James Joyce berühmt, die in „Dubliner“ versammelten 15 Kurzgeschichten sind das erste Prosawerk des irischen Jahrhundertliteraten. Sie bilden einen Fundus, aus dessen Themen und Figuren sich Joyce für spätere Arbeiten immer wieder bediente. Schon deshalb fällt ihnen für das Verständnis des Joyce’schen Gesamtwerks eine besondere Bedeutung zu – der Zyklus gilt als bester Zugang dazu. T.S. Eliot urteilte: „Zuallererst lese man ‘Dubliner’. Das ist die einzige Möglichkeit, das Werk eines der größten Schriftsteller zu verstehen, nicht nur unserer Zeit, sondern aller europäischen Literatur.“ Sämtliche Geschichten spielen in Joyce’ Heimatstadt Dublin. Sie alle bieten mit suggestiver Kraft Einblicke in die in Dublin zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts herrschende lähmende Beengtheit und Erstarrung. Die Sehnsucht nach dem Ausbruch daraus gesteht Joyce seinen in unterschiedlichsten Milieus – der bürgerlichen Mittelschicht, politischen Clubs, der Zuhälterszene usw. – heimischen Figuren zu. Doch verwehrt er ihnen das Gelingen – sie müssen in ihrer aussichtslosen Lage verharren. So zeichnet Joyce das Bild einer ebenso spannungsgeladenen wie paralysierten Stadt. Ins Deutsche übertragen von Georg Goyert, der – in Abstimmung mit James Joyce – auch die erste Übersetzung des „Ulysses“ ins Deutsche besorgte. Für diese E-Book-Ausgabe der „Dubliner“ wurde der zuletzt 1968 im Suhrkamp-Verlag, Frankfurt, erschienene Text behutsam modernisiert.
